World Business Council on Sustainable Development

wbc.JPGThe World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is an association of several companies which have a common goal: the sustainable development in the world. It was created in 1995 when Business Council for Sustainable Development and World Industry Council for the Environment amalgamated. Its head office is based in Geneva, in Switzerland and Mr Bjorn Stigson is the president. Today, this association has about 200 members spread around the world in more than 35 countries. It is also a Regional Network of 55 organizations (national and regional) mostly located in developing countries. The WBCSD is concentrated on four major areas: Energy and Climate, Development, the Business Role and Ecosystems.

The companies make available their knowledge, their experience and appropriate human resources. The WBCSD is governed by a Council composed of the Council members of the different member companies. Through the member companies we can find multinational companies like EDF, Gaz de France, L’Oréal, Michelin, Suez, and Veolia in France; 3M, Boeing, General Electric, General Motors, PepsiCo, Procter and Gamble, Coca-Cola, The New-York Times in the USA; Canon, Honda Motor, Nissan Motor, Sony in Japan… Also, the WBCSD cooperates with other institutes and organizations such as the World Bank, the UNEP, the UNDP…

Today, multinational and national companies face the problem of environment and have to react if they want to have a good image. As a result, there are more and more organizations such as WBCSD in the world.
